The History of a Bootlegger

Bootlegger. One who makes, transports, or sells illegal or smuggles merchandise.

In the early days of the American merchant navy, sailors wore high, flared-top boots. On returning from overseas trips, when they came ashore they smuggled in illicit goods tucked inside their ample boot legs. The practice came to be known as bootlegging. The term was revived during the Prohibition Era (1919-1933) and referred almost exclusively to smuggling hard liquor, or to domestic making and selling of it.

  3. Koco...Thanks for following. Please join in the discussions when you get a chance. I will be by to check out your blog tomorrow. :)

Matt...They wore flared-top boots. I always thought it had to do with men who hid distilleries in the mountains and then smuggled the alcohol in their boots. I didn't know the sailors were involved either.

  4. I didn't know that. But I guess it makes sense... sailors were known for their 'tom-foolery' :)
Cute lil blog- interesting! I LOVE to read but don't have much time... I'm into the classics- not too much else. Although I did break down and read the Twilight series recently. There's something to be said for not being out of the loop COMPLETELY!! I can't bring myself to get into Harry Potter, though... :)
Someone sent me a book on getting your kids to do their chores for me to review... :) Don't laugh, but thats actually exciting to me! :))))

  9. Melissa and Tiffany...Ughh! I know how you feel about not having the time to read sometimes. Every singe time school starts back up I ache because I am not able to read at my leisure. Of course, I am still reading. You can't be an English major without reading a frak load every week. The books chosen are just not always what I would pick up myself. I have not read any Mary Higgins Clark, but I have seen her books in stores and some of them look really good.

Anyway, thanks for coming and following back. i really appreciate it!

Matt...I know and thank you. You know where my mind is almost most of the day. lol. I was just stating it correctly after fixing the typo.

Debbie...Yeah! I was so excited to see that there were 100 followers when I woke up this morning! That makes you very special!!! I may have to do a feature or something on you just for the heck of it so don't disappear. I'll contact you if I get the chance to write one up. Oh, and thank you!

  10. Hi AubrieAnne,

I hope you enjoy your New Year's celebration. I plan to do exactly the opposite of the ladies in the picture for this post--well, at least I plan to have a few. Whether I touch lips that have had some is an entirely different story. LOL

I might do some writing too, but who knows how that will turn out if I've had a few.
