"The Tourist" Movie Review

At first, I thought, "FINALLY! Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie are making a movie together!" Then, I thought, "CRAP! They've both done some strange movies lately and this could be double the disaster."

Luckily, it started playing on the Stars channel while I had the free few months or so, so I figured I might as well DVR it (BEST invention EVER!) and give it a try.

I was not disappointed!!! Parts were a little artsy, yes, but the overall story was fascinating and terribly romantic!

Johnny Depp plays his signature slightly not-all-there, but handsome persona, charming you the whole way through with his clumsy, yet clever character.

Nevertheless, Angelina Jolie steals every scene (a VERY difficult thing to do next to the previous Captain Jack Sparrow). She's stunning from head to toe! Looking robust, healthy, steeled and confident, yet graceful, she makes me want to be her, and have the capabilities to stare someone straight in the eye and either intimidate or attract them without saying a word!

This is a difficult one to summarize, even just a little without giving too much a way, but I will try and just be plain cryptic for you:

Depp is a tourist who meets a beautiful woman during his travels that changes his entire life from a seemingly dull existence into an edge-of-your-seat European adventure. The problem is, did he ever want to meet this mysterious beauty in the first place, or did he decide to stay with her the moment he first laid eyes on her.

Definitely one to check out. Especially if you love just a little artiness, but not too much, some action, adventure and intrigue, and just the right amount of romance.

  1. Lol, didn't know that "artsy" is a negative trait.

  2. Matt...I don't think it's a negative trait. Just I don't like "artsy" movies. I don't want to think too hard when watching a movie. I know that might sound bad, but I feel like the plot is lost in "artsy" movies because the creators were too busy with some sort of big concept that takes a lot of effort from the audience to figure out.

Plus, I find that "artsy" movies, especially indie films, feel the need to explain their movie, with some annoying v/o or a double-take/zoom/freeze effect with the camera to make us pay special attention to something where other movies just expect up to get it. I feel like I'm being babied when watching "artsy" movies. It's annoying.

Of course, I know not all artsy/indie films are like that. I just notice it more in them so I tend to avoid the entire genre if at all possible.

    1. Very interesting. You make valid points. On my own, I usually don't end up watching movies unless they are popular or blockbusters (I am generalizing), so I haven't seen many artsy films. But I can totally see where you're coming from with the few that I have seen. Especially in the zombie genre, from which I have viewed several films.

  3. I enjoyed this movie completely! I love how Johnny Depp can bring something to every role he plays even though I think we ALL think of him as Captain Jack. I can't say I've ever been disappointed in a movie of his. Not crazy about Angelina, but I have to give her she's a good actress. Not real sure why I'm not crazy about her, she's a beautiful woman, humanitarian, etc., just never got on her boat lol Great movie though, enjoyable from first to last!

  4. Ordinarily, I wouldn't, but Depp is talented. I'll give it a go.

    1. Yeah, we did have totally different opinions. In fact, now I remember reading your review before, when I was still deciding whether or not to see it. Funny, people can have such different opinions. It cool though. I liked some of your points.

I think what really helped me was that I hadn't figured out the ending before it happened, like at all. Maybe I wasn't paying good enough attention in the beginning, but the ending happened and I was surprised and pleased.
