The History of Uppity People

Just in case you were wondering.

Uppity. Inclined to be haughty, snobbish, and/or arrogant.

This term came into the English language in the seventeenth century when an extremely high (8 to 26 inches) platform shoe called the “chopine” was popular with the aristocratic ladies. This style of shoe enabled them to (literally) “look down” on folks of lesser status, and for the later to label the chopine wearers as “uppity.”

  1. That's nifty. Reminds me of when King Henry designed high heels.

  2. Okay, I needed that laugh. I need shoes--uppity shoes. And I know some people who have them. Ha!

  3. Matt...Yeah, I read about that in my dictionary a few weeks ago. There's a shoe style and heel style named after him.

Pamela...Welcome! I thought it was pretty funny too.

  4. me too. i need those kind of shoes since i cannot stretch my femur and force my epiphyseal plates (that part of the bone that grows) to extend my height.
You see, I'm short and am fond of wearing pumps and high heels. but these one, uppity, that's way off my balance. hahaha. or else I may accidentally slip and consequently develop sprained ankle. ouch!

I am tall, I fell, I'm 5'9" on a good day, but many of my friends ar shorter. We have a lot of fun on the subject, jokes flying around, but it's all endearing.

Eschelle...You are just as welcome. I like it when I can teach people new things, especially when it is as random as this! lol. Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!

  7. Hello Rheanna. It's very nice to meet you and have you here. I love meeting people who share my obsessions (That is a very accurate word. I am easily obsessed with things. Especially writing, reading, etc. lol.)

At the moment, I am only selling my jewelry at Salon West in Traverse City, MI because they have been so kind as to allow me to have my jewelry there for free! However, I hope to be doing some art festivals this coming summer and may even be setting up and etsy account. I'll keep everyone updated.

I will certainly stop by, probably tonight after my classes. Also, looking forward to your blog hop. I'm thinking I will need to host my own to repay everyone for allowing me to participate and find others. :)

    See ya around!

  8. You girls wanna get all up in that uppity.

  9. I would. I absolutely adore high heels. I have the most beautiful pair of black velvet heals with a zipper-like detail across the toe. I just feel too tall when I wear them. Unless, I'm hanging out with my friend that is 6'2" but that's the only time I feel of normal height in heels. I tell him that he has to stand next to me so that I don't feel awkward!

  10. 6'2", wow. There's certainly nothing wrong with being tall. You stand proudly above the other women. But it's not an uppity pride; no, it's a sense of pride in "standing out."

    Or some such poeticism.

  11. Sounds good to me. Makes me want to change my motto. (That is, if I had much of a motto to begin with. lol.)

  12. I'm drooling now! I think I 'x'ed out of this before my comment posted a day or two ago cuz I could have SWORN I commented bleh

I'm such a shoe whore, of course everyone tells me the shoes I love are horrid, but hey, I don't care, I love them and that's all that matters, but heels are my first love with shoes. The higher the better, helps that I'm only 5'4" so I can get away with any height!

  13. Yeah, ya lucky duck. I wish I was at least 2-3 inches shorter so I could wear all my sexy heels daily. I also love a good funky shoe. They are good for sprucing up an outfit.

  14. You should wear your "sexy heels" anyway. Guys might like a girl who stands out.

  15. I do, I just feel awkward, like I said.

  16. I love this word - uppity! Can't say I've ever used it, though I may remedy that now. Marvellous. X

  17. lol. Yes, I don't think I've ever used it either, except when joking around maybe.
