Books for Walls Project!

Hey, everyone! I thought I would pop on by and write you a quite blurb on this blog I stumbled across (or perhaps stumbled across me.) While I was working at the restaurant, I met a wonderful woman and her two daughters. They wanted to interview me about my home being THE most beautiful place in America. These ladies were so kind and we really hit it off without any trouble. I also found out that they have a passion for reading and books (just like me) and that they are running their own website (in kind of a blog format.) I want you all to go and check them out!!! Let's Catch Up!

Hey there fellow bloggers and bloggettes! What's been going on with all of you? I'll give you the quick lowdown on me! I know I've been gone quite a bit.

The beginning of the year was a bit rough. Christmas was long and I got the flu. My family experienced some personal tragedy,. but things are better now, everyone is doing really well. I graduated from college (TWICE!!!) So, I now have my Bachelor's degree in English/Creative writing with two minors in art and history. I also picked up an Associate's in general studies (who knew?) when I was finishing up some final classes at my community college. I started looking for a new job, didn't find one, went back to my old waitressing job, got bored and stressed at the same time (not a good combo). And now, I am volunteering at my local chamber of commerce (they let me write and edit anything and everything! (Yipee!)) and I just got an internship with TAHRA, a local human resource association (they too allow me to edit and write whatever I want! (Double Yipee!))

I've been reading a lot! I started Maria V. Snyder's (one of my favorite authors) second trilogy! The books are "Storm Glass," "Sea Glass," and "Spy Glass." I am loving them and recommend them to everyone. (However, you should read the first trilogy "Poison Study," "Magic Study," and "Fire Study" first. I also read her first young adult book, "Inside Out," and am waiting for "Outside In" to come in the mail. I've also tried reading more of "The Vampire Diaries" even though the show is still way better than the books (Go figure!) I also started the Immortal Instruments trilogy. That was pretty good. And I am looking forward to starting "Incarceron" which is being turned into a movie, starring Taylor Lautner (Did I ever mention that my aunt is dating his uncle?!?!?)

Sadly, I have done next to nothing with my writing :(. I've got plans though. lol.)

WYE? Bookmark Break Challenge (9 Month Update!)

Susan has got the rest of the competition shaking in there totally awesome shoes! She's already read 115 books! Then, if you were to take the number of books I have read and subtract them from Susan's you will almost get the number of books out second and third place contenders have read. Poekitten is at 79 and rose is at 70. They are closely followed by Shah and Kyria whose numbers rank in the 40s and Natalie who is at 39. In the lower and mid 30s are Me at 35 and Selena at 30. Only Michele is in the 20s at 25 and only A Woman's Right to Shoes is in the teens at 15. Holding steady towards the end are The Creative Muslimah at 8, dtwilight at 7, Mrs. Facehead (a new addition) at 6, Patrick at 5, Moana at 4, and Alissa at 3.

Bookmark Break Challenge (7 Month Update!)

We are now more than half way through this crazy competition! I know I have been pretty MIA here, but the competition is still on and many of you have not put down those books for even a second!!!

Wow! In these last few months the standings have made a few little shifts! That's what I like to see!

Susan is still holding on tightly to the number one spot with 88 books! She also has a very nice countdown for Cassandra Clare's new book on her blog. That was interesting because I just completed "City of Bones" by Cassandra Clare this weekend!

Poekitten has stolen the number two with her 62 books read. I also love the new look on her blog!

Rose is now in third with 47 books. Although, I may be recieving an update from her that may shake the standings once again!

Shah has taken my fourth place with 36 books. She is also on a neat little website called Shelfari! She turned me onto thgis website early in the year and we both use it. Kyria is in fifth with 31 books. It looks like she is loving L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series. I would love to read those sometime.

Natalie is in sixth with 30 books. She just read a Caroline B. Cooney book. At one point, when I was in middle school, I read almost all of her books! I especially loved her Both Sides of Time trilogy!

In eigth is Michelle wih 22 books. She's really been climbing the competition ladder these last few months!

Women's Right to Shoes and Selena are both in ninth with 15 books.

The Creative Muslimah is in tenth place with 8 books and has been one of the only contestants to really reach into non fiction reading.

In eleventh is dtwilight with 7 books. She has read A Little Princess which I love!

In twelfth is Patrick with 5 books. He really seems to like reading books multiple times! He's read The Hobbit 3 times and Silmarillion 4 times. I too like to read books multiple times (especially Harry Potter!)

Moana is in thirteenth place with 4 books. She has been reading a lot of Neil Gaiman's books so if there are any fans out there, Moana would be a good person to discuss some of his works with. I know The Creative Muslimah has read Coraline!

Finally, Alissa is in fourteenth place with 3 books. She also has a very nice review of the new/final Harry Potter movie that discusses some great points about deciding whether or not the new movie is appropriate for your children or not. :)

Susan is still holding on so strong with a solid 60 books!! Rose is steady in second with 47 books! I also must commend Poekitten who has jumped all the way up to 42 books! Shah and I are still duking it out for fourth place with 23 books! As are Kyria and Natalie for fith with 20 books! And, so are are A Womand's Right to Shoes and Selena for sixth with 15 books! I'll tell you a bit. In these last few days I have finished "Elyon" by Ted Dekker and "Wanted" by Sara Shepard. I am particularly proud if finishing these books because they are both the final books in their series. Ted Dekker's "Lost Books" series had 6 books in total and Sara Shepard's "Pretty Little Liar" series had 8 books in all!!!! Crazy long series!!!! But so much fun.

Now, I am starting "A Game of Thrones" by George R.R. Martin. I heard so much about him while taking my science fiction and fantasy class, and with HBO starting a series based off of the books, I am so excited to start this fascinating set of 4 books! I'm only 3 chapters in and I already know I am going to love every bit of it!!!

10 Notes for a Villain

1. Please live in a not-so-secret underground lab, a dark and spooky castle, or a cave on your own deserted island.

2. Please do wear black with goggles, lab coats, trench coats, capes, top hats, masks, clown makeup, velvet suits, eye liner, pointy shoes, and/or metal spikes.

3. If you must hire your own sidekick/assistant, they should either be shorter than you (preferably at or below legal midget size), smarter than you (preferably with a sarcastic wit), or deformed (preferably hunchbacked.) Their name should also be of Scandinavian origins, such as Igor, or ridiculously simply, like Fred.

4. When spying on your hero, please choose a potted plant or column of some sort to hide behind and/or simply disguise yourself with a ball cap and sunglasses.

5. If you ever need your hero to be in a specific spot, at a specific time, please capture their love interest/sidekick and explain what the hero must do to get them back in either a cryptic ransom note or phone call.

6. Please refrain from standing under chandeliers and pianos. They have a habit of falling from the sky and squishing villains.

7. Before carrying out your plan, please explain said plan to your hero so that they may stay one step ahead of you at all times.

8. Once you are done explaining any of your evil plans, please cackle loudly. This gives your hero just enough time to stop you from pressing the big red button, using your death ray, and/or raising an army or zombies or robots.

9. Whenever you happen to capture your hero, and are seconds away from killing them, please pause for just a moment and give a rousing speech about how you thought this day would never come. This will give your hero just enough time to escape.

10. Finally, never, I repeat, never actually kill your hero. If you kill them, the series ends and you will no longer be famous.

A sentence or two on what your blog is about: It’s my attempt to narrate my life while omitting the boring parts (almost everything) and sometimes exaggerating (we all do it!).

Book Lover Questions…

What is your favorite book and why? The Princess Bride, but only the ‘good parts version’ abridged by William Goldman. The movie is also my favourite, but the book expands so much on my favourite characters and provides so much more backstory.

Other favorites? Pride & Prejudice, Harry Potter, the Tudor novels by Phillippa Gregory, A Year in the Merde.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Usually historical fiction, but I’m agitated when an author takes too many liberties with known historical facts.

Where do you like to read? Curled up on the couch with a soft blanket, roaring fireplace is optional but preferable.

Do you prefer paper books or ebooks? I much prefer paper books. I’m a tactile person, so having the book in my hand is a given. I also love the way books smell—especially old books.

Do you prefer to buy or borrow books? Buy. I don’t write in my books, nor do I dog-ear pages, but I like building my library, and having the ability to re-read books that I enjoy.

Do you stop reading when you are tired or when you hit chapter breaks? I try my very best to stop reading at either chapter breaks, but that frequently causes me to fall asleep while reading.

When you finish a book do you usually keep it, throw it away, sell it, or give it away? When I was 19 and backpacking Europe, I gave my copy of “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” to a nice Korean girl that I met at my hostel in London. I had signed my name, country, and the date the I finished it in the front cover before handing it over. To my dismay, three months later I stumbled across that very book in a hostel in an entirely different country—in the hands of a guy from Mexico City. The inside covers (front and back!) were completely covered in names, nationalities, and dates. I couldn’t believe how quickly and frequently that book had been passed on, and I was floored that I had the chance to see it again. Ever since then, I try to share my books when travelling…but at home I usually end up keeping my favourites for myself.

What helps you decide on a book? (Book reviews, suggested by friend, by browsing the shelves, etc.) Everything from a recommendation, to the fact that it is on sale, written by an author that I enjoy, or one that I stumble across randomly while combing the bookstore for interesting reads.

Do you prefer to read a book that stands on its own or is a part of a series? Is it cheating to say both? I enjoy well-written one-off books, but I also enjoy the suspense and prolonged reading experience that you get from series. Although, the suspense of waiting for the next installment makes me a little loony sometimes.

So You Want to be a Writer questions…

A few sentences about your writing: What do you write (blog entries, novels, poetry, etc)? Why do you write? I’m a blogger, so it’s no surprise that I am very open about my thoughts, emotions, and life in general. I try to keep it honest, and I try to be me at all times. It’s just a space for me to unleash my pent up thoughts upon the world, and I’m lucky enough to have a few people that read it—and enjoy it!

Did you always know that you wanted to write? I’ve always been a very creative person, but my short attention span has usually interfered with my ability to write anything longer than a blurb. The more I write, the more comfortable I become with myself and my style, and the easier it is to write.

Favorite Questions…

What’s your favorite food? Ohno. My first thought was “cheese”, but I reserve the right to answer “everything (subject to exclusions)”.

Favorite color? Purple

Poll #7 Results: Top 20 books on BBC's list: Which ones have you read?

Wow! That's a lot of reading! These books are supposedly what BBC considers to be some of the best books that you need to read sometime in your life. And it looks like several of you are well on your way to completing a good chunck of the list. However, this is just 20 of the books on the list. Now, off to the results...

The majority of us, at 14% have read To Kill a Mockingbird. I myself had to read it in 7th grade and it is one of my mom's favorite books.

Next, 11% of us have read Harry Potter. I've read the 1st book once, the 2nd book 3 times, the 3rd book 3 times, the 4th book once, the 5th book twice, the 6th book twice, and the 7th book twice! I love them all.

10% of us have read The Chronicles of Narnia. I have yet to read any of these books I am curious who has read ALL of them. Have any of you read them ALL!? I think there are 6-8 of them, right?

9% of us have read Pride and Prejudice and/or Little Women. Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books and I have started Little Women in the past, but have yet to finish it. I don't know why.

7% of us have read Great Expectations. I read Great Expectations as a Great Illustrated Classic when I was in 6th grade or so. The Great Illustrated Classics are awesome books that simplify literature for the sake of young readers. Then, when I was in 8th grade, I had to read the actual original text (WAY too early to be reading a book like that. It's so complicated) but I was able to understand it better after reading the Great Illustrated Classic.

6% of us have read Winnie the Pooh. I've never read the book, but I loved the show when it was on and all the little movies!

5% of us have read Lord of the Rings and/or His Dark Materials and/or Jane Eyre. I've read The Hobbit, but I don't know if BBC meant to include that book or just the trilogy. I have also read The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife, but I have yet to tackle The Amber Spyglass to finish it all up. Does anyone know if another movie is being made for The Subtle Knife? Jane Eyre is on my bookshelf, but I haven't finished it yet.

4% of us have read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and/or The Wind in the Willows and/or The Catcher in the Rye and/or Wuthering Heights. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is another one of my favorite books. So funny! Wuthering Heights is on my bookshelf but I haven't finished it yet.

2% of us have read Catch-22. I never have, but I remember it being assigned as an option in 8th or 9th or 10th grade.

1% of us have read War and Peace (which I just realized that I spelled that wrong on the pie chart, but I am not going back to change it) and/or Nineteen-Eighty-Four. I haven't read either of these. Heavy stuff!

0% of us have read Captain Corelli's Mandolin and/or Rebecca and/or Birdsong. Honestly, I don't think I have even heard of these books until know. Maybe Rebecca, but I don't know what it's about. I do recognize a the author's to a degree though.
