Discussion Topic: Do you Reread?

If you haven't already noticed, this year my booklist has been jam packed with rereads!!! I've reread all the Hunger Games books and Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. And, currently, I am rereading The Host, Game of Thrones, Anna Karenina, and Outlander. Some of you may be wondering "What's up with that?"

I'm partial to rereading books, but not every book. It has to be one of my favorites (in which case I can read the book more than twice, three times, ten times, it really doesn't matter), or it has to be one that caught my interest, but there was something that I didn't quite get and it deserves one more read to really cement it in my mind. Another scenario would be when a movie or tv show is being made out of the book and I want to catch up again before seeing it. :)

Although, I know there are people out there that would never reread a book. Why reread when there are so many new books out there that you have yet to read? Better to have more books under your belt than a few?

Either way it's reading!!! Check out this interesting article on the 26 Benefits of Reading!

So, your turn! Do you reread? Why or why not? Do you see any benefit to rereading? To not rereading?

I'd love to hear from you!

Discusion Topic and Questions: Fast Readers!

I was feeling really great about myself this week! With a combination of the power being out, having started some really good books lately, and the CW playing reruns for the last week or more, I have finished 4 books in the last week! That boosted my total number of books so far this year from 9 to 13! I am well ahead of my goal (trying to finish at least one book a week and with only 10 weeks having passed this year, I am 3 weeks ahead!) I mean, I have never considered myself the fastest reader, especially if I am reading something I don't necessarily love, but I am a "good" reader. I think I read faster than most people and can generally understand and retain everything I read and I don't stumble while reading.

So, when did my ego get a little bruised? Thank you for asking! It was right about the point when I was updating the competitor's list and found out that some people have completed 10 BOOKS this week!! If I could read that much, that fast, it might actually justify the amount of books I buy on near weekly basis! Way to show off you flippin amazing people!!! I'm proud!

This has now led to me wanting to ask a few questions! Good questions. (Please note that I am not doubting anyone's awesomeness. Just curious how you get to be so awesome!!!)

1. How do you read so fast? Or do you spend a lot of your time reading? I, myself, only get in about an hour a day. Sometimes a bit more on the weekends.
2. Is reading a part of your profession, or just a fabulous hobby? For me, for now, it is just a fabulous hobby. One day I want it to be a very large part of my profession.
3. This is semi related to the last questions...Do you get paid to read books? Not necessary cash, but perhaps you get the books for free and then you review the book or write about it. I'd love to get into that!
4. Do you find that you remember a lot of what you read or do you often reread books? Some books I finish in a day, but I still tend to remember most of what I read. A year later, I might not, but then is a good time to reread!
5. Anyone else have any questions? Maybe even a super reader has a question!

Let me know! Hop on board and answer some of these or ansk other question! I love to hear from everyone!

Discussion Topic: What Compels you to Read a Book for the First Time?

I know this topic has been discussed before, but perhaps not all by itself or to this length.

What I am wondering is what compels you to read a book for the first time?

Or, another way of saying this might be...

What are the steps you go through to determine what to read?

I think many people start with a recommendation from someone, especially a friend or a family member, but what happens if you are out of recommendations, you've just finished that spare books on your shelf, and the last thing you read was one of the best books you have picked up all year! Where do you possibly go from there!?

Now, I'm one of those kinds of people that stockpiles! Very rarely are there no other books on my shelves that I have yet to read. Currently, I believe there are over 100 books on my shelf left to read, just waiting for me to choose one of them next! Nevertheless, when I am looking for the next best thing in stores, the first thing I do is...

1. Look at the book cover. Now, I know they say never to judge a book by it's cover, but it certainly is the best way for a book to make a first impression.
2. If the cover in enticing enough, I read the title. Titles that tend to grab me are usually peculiar, something I have never heard before. For example "The Near Witch," "The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane," and "The Knife of Never Letting Go," all very insteresting titles.
3. Then, if I am still hooked (which I almost always make it to step 3) is I read the backcover of the book. This is really the do or die point! Does the story appeal to me, does it sound original, like a fun quick read, or the same old, same old, ripoff of something else, or just completely opposite of what I feel like reading. I tend to lean towards characters similar to my age with a touch of romance. I enjoy fantasy and sci-fi more, with some historical fiction and tend to shy away from realistic fiction.
4. Next, I check the price! With so many books waiting to be read already, it's hard to spend more than $7 on a book that you're not positive about. However, you wouldn't believe how many books I can find for $5 or less. I've got all my little places.
5. Finally, I turn to a random page, kind of towards the beginning and read a page or two, just to get a good feel for the writing.
6. I make the final decisions. To read or not to read. To buy or not to buy!

What is your process when you are faced with a book store like the one above!!!??? That's a lot of books to choose from!!!

What's on my Bookshelf?! (G-R)

Moving on! A few days ago I shared with you guys some of the books that are sitting on my book shelf, just itching to be read. Like I mentioned before, I've gathered quite the collection of books so far this year, more than ever, and I am both excited and overwhelmed by it. Excited because I now have so many books to choose from, but overwhelmed because I don't know which one to pick up next.

So, just like last time, I am asking everyone to look over the list and let me know what books you have read, which ones you recommend, which ones you want to read yourself, what books you too have bought and are waiting to read, or any kind of mini book review. AGAIN, I stress, I HAVE NOT READ ANY OF THESE BOOKS YET, so PLEASE, NO SPOILERS!

Also, I thought I would note that I just applied to work at the new book store that is coming to town, Books A Million! I'm very excited. I know it won't be that high paying, full benefits job I have been looking for and apply for for the last few months, but it could be a good way to make a bit more money to feed my book buying obsession. We'll see!
Anyway, here's the continuation of my list!

What's on my Bookshelf?! (A-F)

Bookshelves are one of the first things that attracts me when I walk into someone's house. I'm always curious what books people are interested in or just what books they are proud enough to display. I have a special bookshelf just for the books I have read and decided to keep, but I have an entire bookcase for all the books I have yet to read! (Trust me, it's a BIG bookcase!!!)

This year I have accumuplated more books than ever. Mostly because I haven't had the time to read as much as I would have liked, but also because two bookstores in my area have gone out of business, I've discovered new outlets for finding bargain books, and since books are one of my main interest, most of my spending money goes towards buying books. :)

So, now, with all these books, I'm having the hardest time deciding which ones to read next! I figured that some of you must recognize a few of the titles and have probably read some yourself and have your own opinions of them. Please, look through the list and let me know some things about them. But remember, I HAVEN'T READ ANY OF THESE BOOKS, so please don't give spoilers! I just want to know if you ahve any of them on your bookshelves, if you enjoyed reading it, if you hated it (let me know why you hated it), if you want to read it, et cetera. Kind of like a mini review/recommendation.

I look forward to hearing what you have to say! Also, feel free to share with me what is on your bookshelves? Let me know in the comments or make your own blog post with your own list and leave me the link!

Discussion Topic: How old (or young) should you be to read yound adult fiction?

This was a guest post I did for Shah @ Wordsinsync while she was a on trip to the UK. I hope you had fun, Shah!

This was the topic of discussion around the proverbial table a few weeks ago on a WEbook.com forum I was participating in and the discussion got pretty lively and interesting. So, I thought I would bring it here to Shah's lovely blog.

So, how old (or young) should you be to read young adult novels. According to publishing companies, they aim for 14 to 21 year-olds. However, my cousin started reading young adult at 12 and a friend of my mother's has a 10 year old that brings home novels from this section of the school library because she wants to read more advanced books (plus, she thinks it is cool to read a big book.) But are they too young? Many young adult novels deal with such horrors as death, rape, the end of the world, adultery, murder, genocide, etc. Are 10 and 12 year-olds able to face that? Should they be protected from it? Should parents be reading it with them? (If any of you know me, you probably know that I advocate for family reading and that parents should be reading almost everything their children are reading so that they may explain difficult concepts!) Then again, some young adult focus on story lines such as friendship, loyalty to the ones you love, the outsider, difficulties at school, divorce, love as the most powerful force on Earth, strength, and courage. These are things young people can relate to and themes they can look up to. So, do we draw the line?

Now, on a lighter note, how young should you be to read young adult novels. I am 23 and I LOVE young adult. I race to the young adult shelves when stepping into a bookstore and rarely do I venture out unless looking for something specific. In the WEbook discussion, there were also several middle aged people and even a 65 and 73 year old that still confess to reading young adult. Should they (and myself) move on?

Now, it's your turn! Note some of the questions above. How would you answer them?
What do you read? Are you already reading young adult? Are you still reading young adult?

Poll #5 Results: What is (are) your primary reason(s) for reading?

Poll #5 has ended. So, what are we to do? Oh, yeah! Let’s break it down and chat a bit about it! This poll’s questions was, “What is (are) your primary reason(s) for reading?” Lots and lots of people read these days. (Crazy, I know! Didn’t we just discuss how this is a waste of time? Click here to get the humor in this.) However, why are they reading? Curious minds wished to know and now we all do…

I whopping 48% of the votes (one of mine being included) claimed to read for pleasure!!! No way! Your life is most certainly full of adventure!

19% of the votes say some of you read for research. Good on you for actually picking up a book or finding articles and journals to do so! You’re not doing the good old pop a question into Google and then eat up the first bullet point that comes up.

13% are reading for other reasons. Please do share what those other reasons were! I couldn’t think of anymore.

12% said you read for school. ME TOO! In fact, I feel like I have only been reading for school. I completed 4 books this week alone for school. I guess that’s what I get for becoming an English major though, and for taking 3 literature classes this semester. Whew! At least the stuff I am reading is good. What are you reading for school?

I good old 4% of dedicated followers and enthusiastic readers are reading to get the news! I honestly do commend you for holding onto that dying art. I like a good newspaper, but I don’t read it. I probably should, but I don’t. I did however get The Onion app for my iphone the other day. I hope to stay a little more up on the news and I figure The Onion will deliver it in a very entertaining way.

Finally, 2% of the literate world are using their skills for gossip and work! I mean, who doesn’t love some good gossip!? Also, I would love to have a job that makes me read (Wait! I do! It’s called COLLEGE!) However, maybe those of you who chose this option are an editor, a teacher, a professional blogger, advertising copy writer, etc. Whatever you do, you’re lucky because you get to read at work! I liked to read at work, of course I was waitressing so it wasn’t quite my job and some days I was so enthralled that I wasn’t even sure why my employer was still paying me to be there. (FYI: I only read when the restaurant was as dead as a graveyard. I’m a good employee.) Anyway, hopefully what you have to read for work is interesting.

Okay, NOW POLL TIME! My favorite part! The next poll is all about you and your creative side, and there are lots of options to choose from. Go check it out at the bottom of this page.

You should know where to go by now. :)

Discussion Topic: Why do people read fiction?

In honor of the current poll, “What is (are) your primary reason(s) for reading?” I present a new discussion topic. So, read it over, let me know what you think, and then go and vote on the poll at the bottom of this page if you haven’t done so already (You only have TWO days left!!!)

Why do people read fiction? Interesting question, huh? I never really thought to ask it until I came upon a forum online where someone asked this…

“I don't understand human behavior. Why do people read and watch fiction books and dramas? It seems like a waste of time.”

Am I wasting my time?

As you can imagine, there was an out roar of replies, justifying reasons why we crazy humans “waste” our time with such insanity!!! Here’s what they had to say…

1.     The capacity to imagine alternative, unrealized future possibilities --- which is essentially the capacity for abstraction and language -- is a key adaptation of the human species. Storytelling is as old as human society, and as essential to human evolution as walking upright.
2.     Why do people create any form of art? (Painting, poetry, sculpture, music, photography, etc) It's been happening since the dawn of man. It's a way to express oneself creatively. And other people like exploring the product of that creativity, as a way to experience someone else's point of view.
3.     Because they enjoy it? This seems very chatfiltery. (NOTE: Chatfiltery is purposefully posting something inflammatory for the sole purpose of getting a reaction.)
4.     I once thought this way, too. Then I read some good sci-fi books. Contrary to your belief, it is possible (and quite enjoyable) to learn about the nuances of the human condition through fiction. Especially in that it provides perspectives that differ from your own.
5.     What's wrong with people wanting to use their free time as they see fit, even if it's "wasting their time?" This discussion reminds me of my favorite quote from Dead Poets’ Society:  "We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."
6.     To travel paths that were unknown to me. To unlock new ides to me. To be told a story. To entertain myself. etc. etc. I'm curious why you feel reading fiction is a waste of time. Is watching a movie a waste of time? Playing an rpg? Or, do you feel everything a person does must be convertible to some sort of tangible profit? It's an odd premise, to my mind.
7.     Just to play Devil's Advocate for a moment, aren't there enough incredible real-world stories out there, so as to make fiction kind of pointless? People are talking about understanding human behavior and motivation, but can't you also do that by, say, reading a historical biography? Or getting to know a friend better? I've got nothing against fiction, just curious as to how some of you would respond to that.
8.     The "incredible real world stories out there" still get packaged into fictionalized accounts, to varying degrees, before being distributed for the public's consumption. Every story is a filtered account, whether or not it bears the "based on true events" sticker. I read fiction because I like it, and I value it as much as non-fiction because they are basically the same thing: people telling stories that contain some truth.
9.     People do many, many things that may be considered by others to be a "waste of time". It really depends on what you consider "good use of time". Is "good use of time" defined as something that increases your production efficiency? I am not a robot on an automobile assembly line in Detroit, and as such, I do many things solely because doing so gives me pleasure. Reading and watching fictional creations gives me pleasure.
10.  Why do some people cook fantastic meals, when the consumption of a prescribed food diet can easily provide the human body with all the nutrients it requires for proper operation? Why do some people have sex without the intent to procreate? Why do some people play sports, when a scientifically-crafted workout regimen would deliver better results in a more efficient manner? Why do some people converse when there is no crucial information that requires transfer? Because they like to.

And that was just the beginning. As you can see, many people reacted differently.

How would you react?
What would you say to this person?
Do you agree with any of the people above?
Would you add anything to their comments?
