Getting your Teaching Degree?

Hello all you wonderful people out there, especially those that either have their teaching degree, are getting it, or even looking to get it.

For a long time now, many people have mentioned to me that they thought I would make a great teacher. I never really disagreed with them, I just didn't know if that was what I wanted to do.

Now, I am thinking that it might be something I would like to go back to school for at some point. I love the idea of teaching older students, especially at a college level, or even high school.

I love the idea of teaching a composition course, even though most students hate it, even I didn't love it, but I would love the chance to turn that around.

I would also love the chance to fight the many diseases that are eating away at the English language these days! I feel that I only just escaped the damages of texting! Or perhaps I care a bit more not to allow it to affect my writing.

I have to make an appointment with the University Center to see what it would take for me to go back to school with a full time job, but I'm curious how many of you out there atre teachers or trying to be teachers, or simply in the same place as I me.

  1. Hey, AubrieAnne! I've got my M.A. in English, and I taught at the college level (composition and literature course) for over three years (both at a major state university with 25,000+ students and at a very small private college with about 1000 students). I now work in a private school for younger kids, and honestly, there's not that much difference between my students now and my old ones! :)

I never intended to be a teacher--it just happened that way after I decided to quit law school and start my English grad program. I was offered a teaching position as a part of that program, and I liked teaching, so I just kept going with it. One thing to note (that was my major hill to overcome in teaching) is that the students will fight you on grammar stuff every single day and in every single paper. You will mark "your" vs. "you're" until you're ready to pull out your hair. You will get papers in text speak. Teaching at the college level is often infuriating, especially in introductory comp classes. Sometimes I felt like I was doing my students some good, but mostly I felt like I was wasting my time and energy trying to correct these ingrained problems they wouldn't let go of. I actually enjoyed my lit/ rhetoric classes much better (though some of the papers I got in there were still atrocious).

If you want to teach at the college level, you'll need, at minimum, an M.A. (if you just want to teach comp classes). If you want to do more literature-based stuff, you pretty much have to get your Ph.D. to work at any major college. I'm happy to share more of my experiences if you want to chat!

Best of luck in whatever you decide to do! :)

    1. Thank you so much for your reply! It gives me more to thinks about. I passionate about the English language and I want to teach others to be passionate about it as well. But I can see how it would get frustrating when students don't care to learn it. I guess the adventure would be finding a way to reach them if passible.

  3. I did a teaching degree to teach psychology in senior/high school and adults. I enjoyed the course but hated being centre of attention. And I did my training in a pretty bad area (I got placed there as I was last onto the course) which meant the kids were less than interested (even though it was chosen subject?) and had little respect for a 'student' teacher. However, a lot of others who did the course do red it. My uncle has been teaching for over twenty years, he now teaches for vulnerable people - adult and children - challenging behaviour and learning difficulties. He loves it. I have a few friends who alo teach. ITs not an easy job but it can be incredibly rewarding. I've been told that you need to feel a calling to teach, to do a difficult job and maintain the passion required to actually teach.

If you feel a calling, and we all know how great you'd be, you should give it a go. You're young Aubrie, you could teach for a decade and still retrain if it didn't prove to stimulate at that stage. What have you got to lose? :D
